How to distinguish い adjectives and な adjectives

There are two types of adjectives in Japanese: adjectives and adjectives.

How can we tell an adjective is an い adjective or a な adjective?

The video below gives tips based on your current learning level

  • Level 1: For those who know up to 100 adjectives. Not familiar with kanji yet.
  • Level 2: For those who study Japanese with kanji
  • Level 3: For those who are more advanced with Japanese learning

  • Level 1: Memorize some of the common exceptions using the memory tip in the video
  • Level 2: Look at the kanji. If the last い is part of the kanji, it’s a な adjective
  • Level 3: Look at the structure. If the stem of ます form verb is used as an adjective, it’s a な adjective
